 IMS/DB2 Database Administrator (DBA) on z/OS typically has a wide range of technical responsibilities revolving around managing and optimizing IMS and DB2 databases on IBM's mainframe operating system. Here are some typical roles and responsibilities:  Database Design and Architecture: Collaborate with architects, application developers, and stakeholders to design and implement scalable, high-performance database solutions that meet business requirements and align with organizational goals.  Database Administration: Manage all aspects of the DB2/IMS database environment on the z/OS platform, including database creation, configuration, monitoring, tuning, backup, recovery, and maintenance.  Database Performance Tuning: Monitoring database performance using tools like CA Sysview or IBM OMEGAMON, identifying bottlenecks, and implementing performance tuning measures such as index optimization, SQL tuning, and understanding of buffer pool sizing.  Capacity Planning: Forecasting database growth and resource utilization to ensure that sufficient resources (storage, CPU, memory) are available to support current and future database workloads.  Database Security: Implementing and maintaining security measures to protect sensitive data stored in IMS and DB2 databases, including user authentication, access control, and encryption.  Backup and Recovery: Developing and maintaining backup and recovery procedures to ensure data integrity and minimize downtime in the event of hardware failures, data corruption, or other disasters.  High Availability and Disaster Recovery: Designing and implementing high availability and disaster recovery solutions for IMS and DB2 databases, such as clustering, data replication, and failover mechanisms.  Patch Management and Upgrades: Knowledge or participation in Applying patches, fixes, and upgrades to IMS and DB2 software to address security vulnerabilities, bugs, and performance enhancements.  Database Monitoring and Alerting: Setting up monitoring tools and alerts to proactively identify and resolve database issues preventing service disruptions.  Compliance and Governance: Ensuring that IMS and DB2 databases comply with relevant industry regulations (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA) and internal governance policies regarding data privacy, security, and auditability.  Vendor Management: Interacting with IBM and other vendors to stay updated on product roadmaps, licensing agreements, and support services related to IMS and DB2 software.  Troubleshooting and Incident Response: Investigating and resolving database-related incidents and service outages in a timely manner, collaborating with other IT teams (e.g., network, system administration) as needed.  Continuous Improvement: Staying current with emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices in IMS and DB2 database administration. Proactively identifying opportunities for process improvements and automation to streamline database management tasks.  Contribute to other DB skills and project management tasks beyond the core skills.
Job Description
  • Experience in DB2 v11, v12 and IMS v15 on z/OS administration.
  • Managing and creation of IMS Control Blocks, DBDs, PSBs & ACBs. 
  • Managing the IMS Database Recovery Control (DBRC) and RECON datasets.
  • Knowledge about IMS SYSGEN process - Defining/Adding Transactions and Programs to the IMS system.
  • Knowledge of IMS database organization using access methods of VSAM and OSAM, HDAM, HIDAM, Fast Path databases (DEDBs).
  • Knowledge on IMS Utilities like DBDGEN, PSBGEN, ACBGEN, Online Changes, IMS commands related to ACB and FORMAT changes.
  • Strong Knowledge on IBM, CA, BMC utilities for IMS, DB2 z/OS DBs and JCL.
  • Sound knowledge in SQL fine tuning and understanding of DB2 access paths on DB2 z/OS.
  • Spearhead team efforts to upgrade to NEW and IMPROVED structure capabilities – e.g., converting Db2 tablespaces to massively improved Universal TableSpace type structures.
  • Identify long running IMS and/or Db2 threads, review the commit frequencies and suggest the application developers with appropriate solutions.
  • Exposure to the entire Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) of DB2/IMS databases from analysis through decommissions, Knowledge on Change management tools like endevor, promoting the DB changes through various staging environments.
  • Proactive monitoring of Databases and performing the health checks, carry out the maintenance on need basis.
  • Working experiences with REXX, COBOL program preparation.
  • 24X7 support experience in a large production environment including Batch support and Abend resolution.
  • Having knowledge of RDBMS & NoSQL along with automation/cloud skills will be an added advantage
